I have bought and sold a few watches over the years but the one I regret selling is the Breitling Headwind. Made in the early 2000s, par epargne black dial, day-date, only fault was that the lugs didn’t have the slight downward curve that the Chronomat Evos of the time had. Still miss it somedays. To make something this complex both legible and beautiful, Breitling uses a complex par epargne (literally: saved) method to produce the dial. First, a solid brass plate receives a layer of silver or gold plating. Next, the dial’s detailed indices are cut into the dial and filled with enamel. The result is an original, technical and eminently masculine look enhanced by indications made using the “par épargne” technique against a pure silver backdrop. The dial side with its famous circular aviation slide rule reflects Breitling’s privileged ties . The Breitling Navitimer 01 (46 mm) Limited Edition has a 46-mm stainless steel case and features a bidirectional bezel inscribed with a circular slide rule, an instrument that enables pilots to make critical calculations such as fuel consumption, distance traveled, and rate of climb/descent.
