I recently had my vintage 1983 Submariner serviced by the Rolex Service Center in Manhattan. It was returned late last month and now it works fine except for one thing -- the rotating bezel is very hard to turn and it seemed to be harder in some orientations than others. The bezel on my 1680 is very hard to turn. So much so, that it won't go any further than 2 hours in either direction. It gets stuck and takes quite a bit of force to turn it back. My local AD said it would be two months and at least 00 to fix it. Holy crap is right! I got my 14060M about 6 weeks ago, and so far it's been an almost perfect watch -- I say almost because (i) the bezel was pretty hard to turn -- difficult to me to imagine turning it with gloves on while diving and (ii) the bezel didn't quite line up at the 12:00 mark, which flared up my OCD tendencies.
My beloved 1998 Submariner has an extremely tight bezel. It's been a gradual thing, one I didn't even notice because I rarely use the bezel for timing or counting down to an event. But it's gotten to the point now that I literally have to take the watch off my wrist to turn it. My Breitling Navitimer sat around for a long time, unworn and unserviced. The bezel was nearly impossible to turn. I took some unwaxed (that's important here) floss and cleaned out around the bezel. Obviously these are two different implementations of a rotating bezel but it may be worth a shot.This instructable will guide you through removing and replacing the bezel on your Rolex Submariner.
